MY TEETH / Broken Teeth

A sports accident caused this damage. Image supplied by David Crosbie BDS.
A broken tooth is one of the commonest dental emergencies. Usually a broken tooth needs attention from your dentist. Broken teeth are not always painful so the temptation can be to leave them untreated. This is a mistake. Often the tooth breaks because it has been weakened by decay – leaving it could result in a bigger problem later.
If you find the broken tooth is sensitive obviously avoid extremes of hot and cold – no harm should come to the tooth in the short term. There are temporary filling materials available from your chemist if you can’t immediately arrange to see a dentist which could ease any sensitivity. These temporary fillings aren’t really effective on front teeth unfortunately.
If you have broken a tooth so badly that nerve is exposed – you might find it bleeds – it is important you get urgent dental care. Contact your dentist for an urgent appointment – explaining your problem – out of hours then use the designated emergency number or NHS direct 0845 4647 .
